Alzheimer’s dementia remains one of the most challenging conditions for families and caregivers, often progressing rapidly and leaving few effective treatment options. Recent clinical observations, however, suggest that hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) may provide meaningful support in slowing decline and even improving brain metabolism.

HBOT and Alzheimer’s Dementia: What the Case Study Reveals

In a documented case, a 58-year-old woman diagnosed with Alzheimer’s dementia experienced rapid progression of symptoms over just eight months. Brain imaging with 18Fluorodeoxyglucose (18FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) confirmed the typical metabolic deficits seen in Alzheimer’s, including reduced activity in key regions like the posterior temporal-parietal and cingulate areas.

After beginning an eight-week course of hyperbaric oxygen therapy, her results were remarkable. HBOT not only stabilized her decline but also reversed some symptoms. Follow-up PET scans revealed a 6.5–38% increase in regional and global brain metabolism, including improvement in the areas most affected by Alzheimer’s.

When HBOT was continued alongside standard pharmacotherapy, her functional level was maintained for nearly two years. This represents the first reported case where HBOT led to both symptomatic improvement and PET-documented metabolic recovery in Alzheimer’s disease.

Why This Matters for Patients and Families

This case highlights HBOT’s potential role in addressing Alzheimer’s pathology on a deeper level. By improving oxygen delivery and supporting brain metabolism, HBOT may help reduce the impact of hypoxia, neuroinflammation, and β-amyloid buildup: all key contributors to Alzheimer’s progression.

For caregivers and families, these results provide a glimpse of hope: a therapy that not only manages symptoms but also supports healthier brain function over time. While more studies are needed, HBOT is emerging as one of the most promising alternative therapies for dementia care.

Looking Ahead: HBOT and the Future of Dementia Therapy

The use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy for Alzheimer’s dementia is still under active research, but early results show real potential. By improving brain oxygen levels and enhancing metabolism, HBOT may give patients and their loved ones more time, stability, and improved quality of life.
