Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy in Alzheimer’s Disease: A Review of Current Research

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common cause of dementia in the elderly, affecting millions of families worldwide. While the exact mechanisms behind the condition remain unclear, researchers continue to explore innovative therapies that may slow progression and improve quality of life. One area receiving growing attention is hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT).

Reviewing the Evidence

A recent review analyzed nearly four decades of studies — from 1980 to 2021 — on the use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy in Alzheimer’s disease. Drawing from 391 full-text articles, the authors examined both animal and human research to better understand how HBOT works and its potential benefits for patients.

The findings indicate that HBOT may address several biological factors linked to Alzheimer’s progression:

  • Improved oxygen supply: HBOT counters hypoxia, a condition of reduced oxygen delivery that worsens cognitive decline.
  • Reduced neuroinflammation: By lowering brain inflammation, HBOT may help slow damage to neurons.
  • β-amyloid influence: Studies suggest HBOT could reduce the buildup of β-amyloid plaques, one of the hallmarks of Alzheimer’s disease.
  • Enhanced brain function: Improvements in blood flow and oxidative balance support better cognitive performance.

What This Means for Alzheimer’s Care

This review underscores HBOT’s potential as an alternative therapy for Alzheimer’s care. While traditional treatments often focus on symptom management, HBOT targets underlying mechanisms such as hypoxia, neuroinflammation, and oxidative stress. Together, these benefits suggest HBOT may contribute to preserving memory and slowing decline in some patients.

That said, researchers emphasize the need for additional clinical trials to define safe, effective, and sustainable treatment protocols. Long-term studies will help determine how HBOT can be best integrated into Alzheimer’s treatment plans.

The Future of HBOT in Dementia Support

The evidence so far is encouraging: HBOT is emerging as a therapy that may not only alleviate symptoms but also support long-term brain health. For families and caregivers navigating the challenges of Alzheimer’s, these findings offer cautious optimism. Continued research will help clarify how HBOT can be applied consistently to enhance outcomes and improve quality of life for patients.
